Preparing for the Great Outdoors - Your Camping Essential

Plus 5 meal planning tips for multi-day hikes.

Ahh the satisfaction of an early morning cup of cocoa as you stand basking in the warmth of the camp fire. The pale light of dawn slowly breaks through the mist shrouded gum trees and the parrots squawk and chortle in the new day. Another outdoor adventure is about to begin.

We're sure a lot of you can vouch for a tea or coffee being an absolute must when going on an outdoor adventure. There's nothing quite like it to pick you up at the start and end to a day.

Sadly, many people miss out on this delightful luxury because they think coffee, tea, and even cereal are too complicated to take with you - but this is where staple foods can really help, and form the foundation for any camping/hiking trip.

Instant milk powder is a camping essential in this case. Cups of tea and coffee, oatmeal, creamed rice, pasta sauces, muesli… lots of food needs milk. Milk powder is not only protein-rich, and light to carry, but it also won’t go off on a hot day like fresh dairy products do. Since regular milk can spoil easily, these are great substitutes.

If you’re a fan of camping, you also need to think ahead when going into remote areas. Sometimes it can take up to 2-3 weeks before you see a well-stocked supermarket.

In other words, it’s a good idea to load up on pantry items. You might not use these items at home always, but on the road, they really come into their own.

Top 5 meal planning tips for multi-day hikes

When you’re travelling, you don’t want to spend hours prepping food as there are so many amazing things to see and explore. Obviously, you need to eat proper to fuel up your day but there are smarter ways to plan around it:

  1. Give your chosen meals a test run before you travel. This way you’ll know what meals you’re going to enjoy and get the most out of during your trek.

  2. After giving them a test run, pre-mix your meals and label each. You’d be surprised at how similar food can look in the evening!

  3. Remove all excess packaging that you don’t need. It’s just going to take up valuable space in your bag. Ziplock bags are perfect for hiking – they’ll keep your meals fresh and not weigh you down.

  4. For longer trips variety is key. It will keep you motivated to fuel up your body for the entire trek to have some different meals to look forward to .

  5. Remember to pack some foods that don’t require cooking on a stove. This way you won’t run out of stovetop fuel so easily.
