6 Lifehacks using Milk Powder

It’s been around for ages, and you probably don't usually think of buying it, but milk powder is a lot handier than you think.

Aside from the fact that it’s easy to store, offers value for money and has a long shelf life, it makes a great substitute for milk in an array of great recipes. Take a look below and explore 6 hacks using powdered milk, including your own hot chocolate mix!

1. Coffee Creamer

If you like to add a little creamer into your morning/afternoon coffee, then you probably already know that it can be a bit expensive. Powdered creamers have a longer shelf life, but why not learn to make your own better tasting one? And it is cheaper too!

Another big plus about making your own creamer is that you can customize it to your own taste buds. Maybe you love the flavour of vanilla, but you think store-bought vanilla creamers are too sweet. Just add a bit of vanilla powder to your creamer instead and cut back on the amount of sugar. So simple!

Ingredients:

4 cups of Wellshine Wellson Whole Milk Powder

1 cup powdered sugar (use less or more to achieve your desired sweetness)

3 tsp melted coconut oil

1 tsp vanilla (optional)

Method:

1. Combine milk powder, sugar and vanilla (if using) in a bowl and whisk together

2. Slowly pour the coconut oil into the bowl and whisk until there are no lumps left

3. Store in an air-tight container for up to 1 month

* We use Wellshine Wellson Whole Milk Powder because it gives the coffee a richer and creamier taste, but you can also use our Skim version if you are looking for a lower calorie option.

2. Hot chocolate mix

Homemade hot chocolate is the perfect recipe for anyone that loves chocolate. Make a big batch and you have your favourite cocoa right in hand. I have yet failed to find a cocoa powder at the grocery store that makes hot chocolate as delicious as this recipe!

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups of powdered sugar 1 ½ cups of Wellshine Wellson Whole Milk Powder 1 cup of cocoa powder 1 tsp salt

Method:

1. Sift powdered sugar and cocoa powder into a bowl

2. Add powdered milk and stir until well combined

3. Store in an airtight container

4. Whenever you feel like a hot cuppa, combine equal parts of chocolate mix and hot water

3. Sweetened Condensed Milk

Condensed milk is cow’s milk from which water has been removed. It’s often found in the form of ‘sweetened condensed milk’ that has sugar added. It's very tasty in tea and a delicious base of numerous desserts from around the world. It’s basically sweet goodness in a can, and while they’re easy to be found at almost any grocery store, most people don’t keep cans of sweetened condensed milk in their pantry. So here's to making your own:

Ingredients:

1/3 cup boiling water

3/4 cup sugar

4 tbs butter

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup Wellshine Wellson Whole Milk Powder

Method:

1. Combine water, butter, sugar and vanilla in a bowl and blend with a hand mixer

2. Add the powdered milk and keep blending until smooth

3. Keep up to one week in the refrigerator

4. Evaporated milk

What differs evaporated milk from condensed milk is the sugar content. Evaporated milk is thinner, less sweet but great for thick & creamy sauces. To make your own evaporated milk, simply pour 1 1/2 cups of water into your blender. Add 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon of Wellshine Wellson Skim Milk Powder and blend until smooth.

5. Whipped Cream

To make whipped cream, just add equal parts of Wellshine Wellson Skim Milk Powder and ice-cold water in a bowl and mix it with a hand mixer until it is nice and fluffy. Then add a bit of sugar and vanilla extract (optional) and beat it until the mixture has thickened.

Use it as toppings for pancakes, mousse, pies and pretty much everything else.

6. Ice Cream

Master homemade ice cream like Heston Blumenthal, a self-professed 'ice cream fanatic', and add a spoon or two of milk powder to your ice cream base. Adding milk powder, rather than a big amount of cream, helps to increase the solids content of the mixture, giving it more body but less weight.
